What Is the
Original Face Module?

What You Will Learn

During the MER Original Face Training, you will learn how to:

The Original Face module is one of the core modules of the MER Professional Training pathway.

This module focuses on the upper body: the face, cranium, jaw, neck, shoulders, arms, thorax and breath. These areas are often deeply connected with expression, protection, communication, stress patterns and nervous system regulation.

In MER, the face is not approached only as a local area. It is understood as part of a larger fascial and energetic network connected with the breath, ribcage, diaphragm, arms, hands, spine and emotional life.

Through deep bodywork, myofascial release, soft listening techniques, breathwork, body reading and somatic awareness, you will learn how to support greater freedom in the upper body and help clients reconnect with their natural expression.

  • Work with the face, cranium, jaw, neck, shoulders, arms and hands through deep, sensitive touch.

  • Understand how upper-body tension can influence breath, posture, expression and communication.

  • Explore the relationship between the fascial network, breathing structures and the upper body.

  • Use soft listening techniques to support release in the breath and nervous system.

  • Develop bodywork strategies for neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, hands, jaw and cranial tension patterns.

  • Work with the ribcage, sternum and diaphragm to support freer breathing.

  • Study the role of the vagus nerve in body awareness, regulation and embodied safety.

  • Explore the anatomy of the rotator cuff and learn specific palpation techniques for the shoulder area.

  • Understand visceral relationships with the breath and upper body, including the liver, lungs and stomach.

  • Create complete MER session plans for upper-body integration.

Développement et intégration des compétences

The Original Face module combines daily meditation, theoretical instruction, practical demonstrations, supervised bodywork exchanges and personal experience.

You will refine your ability to:

  • Work with the upper body through deep, sensitive touch

  • Assess fascial and structural patterns in the face, neck, arms and breath

  • Use breathwork and soft listening techniques safely and effectively

  • Work with the jaw, cranium, shoulders, ribcage and diaphragm

  • Understand rotator cuff and shoulder patterns

Face, Jaw and Cranial Integration

The face and cranium hold important patterns of expression, protection and communication.

In this module, you will learn how to work with the fascial structures of the face, jaw and cranium with sensitivity and precision. You will explore how tension in these areas can relate to breathing, neck mobility, stress patterns and emotional expression.

This work supports more space, softness and awareness in an area of the body where many people unconsciously hold effort, control or protection.

Neck, Shoulders, Arms and Hands

The neck, shoulders, arms and hands are deeply connected with action, expression, contact and communication.

You will learn how to assess and work with common upper-body tension patterns through body reading, palpation, myofascial release, joint awareness and deep bodywork.

The module includes specific attention to the rotator cuff, elbows, wrists and hands, supporting practitioners to create more complete and integrated upper-body sessions.

Breath, Ribcage, Diaphragm &
Vagus Nerve

Breath is central to the Original Face module.

You will learn how the diaphragm, sternum, ribcage, thoracic structures and upper body influence breathing patterns and nervous system regulation.

The module also introduces the vagus nerve as an important part of body awareness, regulation and embodied safety. Through touch, breath and presence, practitioners learn how to support clients in finding more space and ease in the breath.

Deep Bodywork &
Psychological Insight

Upper-body conditions are often connected with protection, stress, emotional holding and communication patterns.

MER does not treat the body as separate parts. It looks at the relationship between fascia, breath, structure, emotion and awareness.

In this module, you will explore how physical restrictions in the face, cranium, neck, arms and breath can relate to psychological and emotional patterns — and how to support release through presence, sensitivity and professional bodywork.

Who is this training for?

The MER Original Face Training is suitable for:

  • Massage therapists who want to deepen their work with the face, neck and upper body

  • Bodyworkers looking for advanced myofascial release techniques

  • Somatic practitioners interested in breath, expression and nervous system regulation

  • Yoga teachers and movement professionals who want to understand upper-body patterns

  • Breathworkers who want to integrate fascia, breath and touch

  • Practitioners working with jaw, neck, shoulder, arm or breathing-related tension patterns

  • People beginning a professional path in MER and fascia therapy

This module can be taken as part of the full MER Certification pathway or as a powerful standalone training experience.

Why it matters?

The face and upper body are strongly connected with how we breathe, express, protect, communicate and meet the world.

When the jaw, neck, shoulders, arms or ribcage hold tension, the effects can influence the whole body — from breath and posture to emotional expression and nervous system regulation.

The Original Face module teaches practitioners how to work with these sensitive and meaningful areas through depth, precision and respect.

When the face softens, the body can remember a more natural way of breathing, moving and expressing.
