What Is the
Trauma Release Module?
What You Will Learn
During the MER Self-Empowerment Training, you will learn how to:
The Trauma Release module is one of the core modules of the MER professional training pathway.
This module introduces an integrative approach to working with breath, movement and touch within Myofascial Energetic Release. It explores how the body can hold protective patterns through fascia, posture, breath, muscle tone, movement and emotional expression.
In MER, trauma release is approached with sensitivity, grounding and respect for the client’s pace. The aim is not to force emotional release, but to create the conditions for the body to feel safe enough to soften, regulate and reconnect.
Through this module, you will learn how to support clients with presence, precision and professional boundaries while working with deeper layers of physical and emotional holding.
During the MER Trauma Release Training, you will learn how to:
Work with breath, movement and touch in a trauma-informed bodywork context.
Understand how protective patterns may be held in the fascia, muscles, breath and posture.
Recognize how stress, emotional repression and daily life patterns can contribute to physical tension, contraction and weakness.
Support emotional release with grounding, presence, sensitivity and professional boundaries.
Explore the 27 zones of fear and how they may appear in the body.
Understand the role of the vagus nerve and the autonomic nervous system in regulation and protection.
Work with fight, flight and freeze responses through body awareness, breath and touch.
Use Myofascial Unwinding as a movement-based approach for somatic emotional release.
Explore the five Reichian character structures and how early protective patterns may influence adult behavior.
Use movement meditations to support embodied emotional awareness.
Develop practitioner skills for resonance, attunement and emotional engagement.
Create safe and structured MER sessions that support regulation, integration and embodied presence.
Trauma-Informed Bodywork &
Energy Regulation
This module teaches you how to work with activation and regulation in the body.
You will explore how energy can build, become blocked, discharge or reorganize through breath, movement and touch. The practitioner learns to support this process without overwhelming the client, staying connected to safety, grounding and body awareness.
This is essential for any practitioner who wants to work more deeply with emotional release while maintaining clarity, respect and professional responsibility.
The Body, Fascia & Protective Patterns
Traumatic or overwhelming experiences can leave protective patterns in the body. These may appear as tension, contraction, numbness, restricted breath, guarded posture or disconnection from certain areas.
MER explores these patterns through the fascial system, breath, movement and body awareness.
You will learn to recognize how the body organizes protection and how touch can support a gradual return to sensation, connection and ease.
The 27 Zones of Fear
A key part of this module is the exploration of the 27 zones of fear.
These zones offer a body-based map for understanding how fear and protection may be reflected in different areas of the body. Through observation, touch and awareness, practitioners learn to recognize these zones and work with them respectfully.
The purpose is not to label or diagnose the client, but to develop greater sensitivity to the body’s protective intelligence.
Vagus Nerve & Autonomic Nervous System Awareness
The Trauma Release module introduces the role of the vagus nerve and the autonomic nervous system in bodywork.
You will explore how the body may move through activation, protection, withdrawal or freezing, and how breath, movement and touch can support regulation.
This helps practitioners work with the body in a way that respects nervous system capacity and avoids pushing the client beyond what can be integrated.
Myofascial Unwinding & Somatic Emotional Release
Myofascial Unwinding is a profound movement-based technique used in MER to support somatic emotional release.
In this module, you will explore both the theory and practice of Myofascial Unwinding, including supervised practice sessions. You will learn how to follow the body’s movements, listen to tissue response and support emotional release without imposing an agenda.
This work helps the body express, reorganize and integrate patterns that may have been held through tension, posture or movement restriction.
De-Armouring & Character Structures
The module also explores de-armouring: the gradual softening of physical and psychological defense patterns that may protect the person but also limit emotional expression and embodied freedom.
You will study the five Reichian character structures and explore how early protective strategies can influence adult posture, behavior, emotional expression and body patterns.
This understanding helps practitioners meet clients with more compassion, clarity and respect.
Emotional Engagement and Practitioner Skills
Working with emotional release requires more than technique.
You will develop practitioner skills in resonance, attunement, presence and emotional engagement. The training introduces five clear steps for engaging emotions safely and respectfully within a bodywork session.
You will learn how to stay grounded, maintain boundaries and support the client without trying to control or direct their emotional process.
Movement Meditations and Embodied Awareness
Movement meditations are used in this module to support emotional awareness, body connection and integration.
Through movement, breath and presence, clients can begin to experience their body not as a problem to be fixed, but as a living source of intelligence and self-regulation.
This approach helps support a more embodied relationship with emotion, sensation and inner experience.
Skill Development and Practical Application
The MER Trauma Release Training combines daily meditation, theoretical instruction, practical demonstrations, supervised bodywork exchanges and personal experience.
You will refine your ability to:
Work with breath, movement and touch in trauma-informed ways
Recognise protective patterns in the fascial system
Support emotional release without force
Use grounding and regulation as part of bodywork
Work with the vagus nerve and autonomic responses
Apply Myofascial Unwinding with sensitivity
Understand Reichian character structures
Create safe and structured MER sessions
Support clients with presence, clarity and professional boundaries
By the end of this module, you will have practical tools for working with emotional holding, protective body patterns and deeper layers of body awareness within the MER method.
Who is this training for?
The MER Trauma Release Training is suitable for:
Massage therapists who want to understand emotional holding in the body
Bodyworkers looking for trauma-informed tools within fascia work
Somatic practitioners interested in emotional release and nervous system regulation
Breathworkers who want to integrate touch, fascia and movement
Yoga teachers and movement professionals working with embodied awareness
Practitioners who want to deepen their understanding of protection, fear and release
People following the full MER professional training pathway
This module can be taken as part of the full MER Certification pathway or as a powerful standalone training experience.
Why it matters?
The body often remembers what the mind has learned to manage.
Stress, fear, emotional repression and protective patterns may be held through breath, posture, fascia, movement and muscle tone. When these patterns are approached with sensitivity and respect, the body may begin to find more space, connection and regulation.
The Trauma Release module teaches practitioners how to work with these deeper layers without force, without pushing, and without losing professional clarity.
When the body feels safe, release can happen naturally.
